These were on the chain link surrounding the dumpsters at the restaurant we went to for dinner tonight. (Shout out to Green Truck, excellent veggie burgers) Brightened up an ugly eyesore a little bit. Made from various sized tin can lids and sides. I thought the center spray can lids were especially inventive.
Toilet Paper Sans Tube
We decided to try these, apparently they've been out since 2010 but not in our market. Yes, I opened the wrong end. I always recycle the tubes anyway but I thought this would save me the trouble. Unfortunately it has a few flaws so we won't be rebuying.
The main problem is that when this reaches the end the last few sheets fall on the ground and then get thrown away. Not very eco friendly since these do not recycle. I read a few other reviews of this from when it first came out and they all said they did not have this problem but I have experience it with both the traditional spring shaped holder and the C-shaped one. It was worse with the C-shape.
The other problem is that the center hole does not keep a round shape of course so when you pull on it the roll has a bumpy motion. Also it seems like the torn sheet stays on the top more than on the front where I'm expecting to find it in the middle of the night.
I would actually be more green if we went with the recycled toilet paper, this has no recycled content. I'm surprised they have not combined the two. However, when we tried the recycled stuff and were not happy with the texture so maybe they figured one thing at a time.
Since it is still on the market 4 years later it must be going over well enough. But because we already recycled all the tubes I don't think this is worth the extra cost. Even if people are throwing away the tubes I would imagine they biodegrade fairly quickly. What they should really put some thought into is the plastic packaging that is not recyclable. (Also dog and cat food bags, there must be tons of those going into landfills.)
Chair Shape
I like the curved shape of these chairs from the side. They are Riverside occasional chairs by Duralee with Blue Note fabric by Nobilis.

My nemesis at Arnold Hall. There are no left handed desks and the curve of this hard plastic back does not agree with me.

Pooper scoopers
Shapoopie
Heard about this again on NPR and I had to check it out. Telescoping arm to reach out and catch it in a disposable container before it hits the ground. The reviews are the most interesting, those who had actually tried it generally thought it worked. Easy to carry, sturdy, ergonomic. The main concerns among commenters related to function were scaring the dog and making it move, therefor missing some poo; not being able to get it out and extend the arm fast enough; and related to that having no auxiliary scoop function to pick up something that was missed.
However the number one objection had nothing to do with the basic design. People were most concerned that they would look like yuppie fussy jerks using this product. By and large the comments were that people would be embarrassed to be seen using this. Also one mention of the lack of biodegradability if the disposable container so also green concerns. (Are my poop bags biodegradable?)
One person who did like it suggested interesting modifications; scoop, light, adjustable angle to the handle. At any rate, it seems that most people thought it was over-engineering a solution to a problem. It does not seem to be available anymore. The last mentions of it are from 2010.
Still, more people have dogs than ever and with cities seeing a revitalization, there are lots of dogs in the city. Is there a better solution...

My favorite exhibition at the scad art museum so far. Similar effect to light streaming through a stained glass window in a church. Similar sense of reverence, enhanced by people standing in the light. We were all brought back down to earth when a wheel chair ran into the wall because it was dark however. Just goes to show you can try to create an experience but you can't control for everything. I also thought the smoke was a little superfluous.
