This was a redesign of my personal space.  The goal was to maximize improvement of form and function with minimum cost.  The original kitchen from the eighties had solid cabinetry but a limited and inefficient layout.

  • Removing the peninsula extended the kitchen to the edge of the refrigerator, improved the working are so two people could comfortably operate and provided a direct path to the pantry on the left (not shown).

  • The custom created island incorporated decorative storage facing the eat in area. It provided storage and electricity for regularly used appliances such as the microwave and toaster oven facing the refrigerator. The top provided a wide cutting/prep area and the far end holds a pull out trash can for easy clean up.

  • The cabinet drawers and doors were updated and no-slam hardware was added to the most frequently used doors.

  • The backsplash was tiled with a focal accent tile over the cooktop. To keep the clean look the outlets were hidden under the cabinets along with additional under cabinet lighting which was activated to a motion sensor.

  • We made a custom concrete countertop that added a strong band of color to an otherwise neutral palette.  A new deep, single bowl sink was added along with new plumbing fixtures.

  • Light fixtures, window coverings and appliances were changed to coordinate with the new design and provide greater energy efficiency.

  • We installed large format gray tile floors to ground the color palette, increase the visual width of the room and tie in the stainless accents.
