We finally finished the uncovering and rehabilitation of this fireplace. It took almost a complete year of extremely intermittent work. Very pleased with how it turned out.

Before: The previous homeowners had covered up the fireplace for a more modern look. I rather impulsively decided to take down the covering box thinking this would be a relatively simple project...
After: 11 months later we finally have a beautiful finished result. It is very close the the original but still has a lot of lived 'character' marks.

Lots of spare wood for future projects...

Original coal fireplace, missing the grate

Lots of nail holes from the cover up and drywall where the mirror should be
Two layers of paint, one white and one cream, wood was dark from soot underneath
Some paint came off easily
Next it was chemical stripper
Took out the drywall piece and started disassembling piece by piece
found these dropped down behind the mirror
on the back of one of the photos
things always look worse before they look better
Bits and pieces, each needed stripped and sanded
first piece stripped of paint
With wood polish, just a hint of it's potential
new mirror
Reassembled, everything was attached from the back
intact and in place before finishing with lacquer
Wall and molding fixed, decor put up

I finally have my room back, thanks to Matt for doing all of the stripping and sanding
